Variant errors

Fix duplicate IDs, inactive variants, and missing placement tracking in OmniLab Smart Links.

A OmniLab Smart Link variant will not save, behaves differently than you expected, or is missing from your reporting. This guide walks through the most common causes and how to fix each one.

You set up each variant in the Add Variant dialog, where you give it a unique Variant Name and Variant ID, plus optional UTM or custom values.

Symptom

Common variant problems include:

  • the variant will not save
  • two variants seem to conflict
  • scans reach the OmniLab Smart Link, but not the intended variant
  • a variant you expected shows no activity in analytics

Likely causes

How to troubleshoot a variant step by step

  1. Open the OmniLab Smart Link and review the variant list.
  2. Confirm the correct Variant Name and Variant ID.
  3. Open the exact distributed link and verify it includes the right ?v= value.
  4. If you used a QR code, scan the exact exported file again.
  5. Run analytics for the right date range and recheck Scans by Variant.

Best practices that prevent variant problems

  • use one clear ID per placement
  • keep variant IDs readable and consistent
  • test every variant link before launch
  • label exported QR files clearly when several variants are involved
  • add variant-specific UTM values and custom variables only when they add real reporting value
